To say we were stuffed was an understatement but I was also ready to get back home and back to yogurt for breakfast and *maybe* forgetting to eat lunch until I just ended up scrambling to put something together at 3pm.
AMERICANO COCKTAIL PLUS
Plus there was the bubbling excitement of reading my first bit of major press in Costco Connection (did you see it?!) The trip took us to day in Portland, all over the Snoqualmie Valley, to eating donuts for 4 straight days, consuming a bloody mary the size of my head, a fantastic steak dinner and breakfast at the Twin Peaks Diner.
AMERICANO COCKTAIL FULL
We had just spent the last 7 days around the Pacific Northwest, we were still there but in downtown Seattle – our last full day of a very long vacation away from home. Let’s reach back a bit in the story though as to why this particular cocktail caught my eye that day instead of my normal order of an old fashioned, shall we? With only three ingredients any well stocked home bar should have what is necessary to mix this up, Campari, sweet vermouth and club soda. It’s also the perfect beverage to introduce you to Campari, which can be quite bitter but has the healing power of settling an upset tummy. Without the gin, it’s a simple aperitif to sip on before a meal with a low alcohol content – so it’s excellent on hot days to refresh you when you want an adult beverage. If you weren’t familiar with it before think of it as a gentler version of the Negroni. Who knows really but what I do know is this drink is light, refreshing and delicious on a hot day. The Italians clearly like to confuse us or perhaps just name any watered down drink after Americans. Yes, yes it is but it’s also a classic Italian cocktail of Campari, sweet vermouth and club soda. “An Americano? Isn’t that coffee? Braden said sitting next to me with a beer in hand. “I’ll have an Americano please.” I said to bartender. Soft, multiple flavors, adored by women. The americano is among the most representative cocktails enjoyed for an aperitif. You can also try another citrus fruit peel such as lemon if that’s what you have at home.Bitter and refreshing The Americano Cocktail is the perfect pre-dinner apertif to enjoy before sitting down to dinner at home or with friends. You can also try this one with tonic water if you prefer which may also make it a little sweeter.ĭon’t have an orange peel? That won’t make or break this recipe so if you don’t have any available you can skip it.

Whatever you call it, any bubbly water will do. The flavor may vary slightly but it will likely still be just as refreshing.Ĭlub soda, soda water, seltzer. This cocktail could really be made with any similar Italian apéritif such as Aperol. Remember that vermouth must be refrigerated once opened and only lasts about 1-3 months. This recipe calls for a sweet vermouth which can easily be found in any liquor store or bar. There are different types of vermouths such as dry or sweet and also many varieties made with flavors such as citrus or floral flavors. Vermouth is a fortified wine that is infused with herbs and spices. So if you prefer an even lower ABV cocktail, or sweeter, then you can substitute Aperol for Campari. Campari is somewhat more bitter in flavor while Aperol is sweeter. Aperol – what’s the difference?Ĭampari and Aperol are both Italian apéritifs that are similar in color and flavor with some differences. Like the Milano-Torino, the Americano has long been something of a bit player in the cast of classic Italian aperitivijust left of frame from the splashy, sun-dappled sensation that is the spritz and perennially edged out by those who favor the scene-stealing brawniness of the Negroni. It’s light and bubbly and easy to make with just three ingredients.Ĭampari vs. Three simple ingredients, endless possibilities. The Aperol Spritz has gained a lot of popularity in the past few years but have you heard of the classic cocktail the Americano? Similar to an Aperol Spritz it is a low ABV cocktail that’s perfect for sipping before dinner on a hot summer day. Jump to Recipe Jump to Video Print Recipe
